Upgrading Your HVAC System? Look for the Energy Star Logo

Choosing a new HVAC system may be one of the more complex processes you go through as a homeowner, but you can simplify it by looking for the Energy Star logo. HVAC products that carry this logo have proven that they not only save energy, but also pay for themselves in a reasonable amount of time.

About the Energy Star Program

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) bestows this logo on products that demonstrate they use less energy consistently under a variety of conditions and that purchasers will recoup the additional cost, if any, in greater energy savings. HVAC equipment that qualifies as Energy Star must have efficiency ratings that exceed the minimum standards set by the U.S. Department of Energy. In order for HVAC equipment to qualify for the Energy Star designation after 2015, the products must use 15 percent less energy than the least efficient heat pump or central air conditioner does. The minimum seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) rating stands at 14 for systems manufactured after January 1, 2015, although Energy Star systems manufactured before that date with SEER ratings of 14.5 or higher may still be available.

Identifying the Logo

You'll find the Energy Star logo on the EnergyGuide label that must be displayed on the packaging or the HVAC equipment itself. The lower right hand corner of the EnergyGuide label will display the distinctive Energy Star or a new classification called Most Efficient. The latter indicates that the appliance goes beyond the requirements of the Energy Star program and will save even more energy.

Benefits on the Energy Star Logo

Since your HVAC equipment consumes approximately half of the energy you use year-round, choosing more efficient HVAC appliances helps you save money. These appliances also lower the overall demand for new energy sources and collectively reduce pollution.
